Solterra Candles began as a passion project in 2015 when our founder, Sarah Johnson, discovered the harmful chemicals present in many conventional candles. After experiencing headaches and respiratory issues from store-bought candles, Sarah became determined to create a healthier alternative without sacrificing quality or fragrance.
She started experimenting with soy wax in her small Canberra apartment, blending essential oils and botanical elements to create clean-burning, aromatic candles. The name "Solterra" combines the Spanish words for sun and earth, reflecting our commitment to harnessing natural elements in our products.
What started as weekend market sales quickly blossomed into a beloved local brand. Sarah's best friend and now business partner, Emma Mitchell, joined in 2017, bringing her background in sustainable business practices and marketing expertise. Together, they opened our first brick-and-mortar workshop in Fitzroy, which has since become a community hub for sustainable living and artisanal craft.
Over the years, we've expanded our range of scents, developed our signature minimalist aesthetic, and built relationships with local suppliers who share our values. Our team has grown to include passionate artisans and sustainability advocates who all contribute to the Solterra vision of creating products that honor both people and planet.
